I was an Ultimate player from 79-94 and loved this sport. I played on a team that practiced at Stanford called SCUM. It stood for severely crazed ultimate maniacs. We played most of our games in the Bay Area but also traveled to Santa Barbara, Chico, Honolulu, Santa Cruz and more for tournaments. Most of my friends were from that team and we are still friends today. I was out playing Frisbee golf last week with friends from the Bay Area and my oldest friend from the east coast Steve. They alerted me to a movie on the history of Ultimate. Called Flatball, you can watch it on Amazon. Check out the trailer.

Here is a comment I made on another site:
I was out playing golf the other day and met the guy who directed Flatball. I checked it out on Amazon and really enjoyed watching the history of Ultimate. I played from 82-94 in Palo Alto. We practiced at Stanford and most of the folks that played were engineers of some sort. Myself, I was a celebration engineer! One of my favorite stories was this: we were practicing at Roble and a bunch of folks were showing up to play that we had never seen before. Turns out it was the Swiss National Team and they were in SF to play in International Championships at Golden Gate Park. This was a tournament we had been part of the previous week! They had the wrong dates and had traveled 8000 miles and the event was finished. Needless to say, they were bummed but we said let's play tonight and then we will host a party for you on Thursday at our next practice. They were very cool folks and they welcomed the invite. We threw a big party with our friends showing up at the field. After the game was over the grills came out and what fun to party with these folks. At one point, they started chanting ground pipe! We had no idea what they were talking about. They ended up digging a hole in the ground with 2 sides. We used a 1/2 beer bottle to create a way to suck the smoke through the ground. On the other side, we used tobacco to create a filter and then put a bunch of pot on top. We lit it and the ground would cool the smoke as it came through.
We sucked on that for a good while until everyone was rolling on the ground in uncontrollable fits of laughter. Thay made a bad mistake in scheduling however we had a wonderful time and hopefully, they still remember our fun times at Roble. This was 1984 or so.
